Welcome

Welcome to Renate's Baton. This blog is mostly for and about my choir, The York Region Community Choir.

But, While I'm holding the baton, I'm in charge. So, if I want to talk about other parts of my life, I will. :)

The choir itself is a community and I'm discovering that we have a lot in common with one another besides our love of music and singing.

When I go off on a tangent, there is always a crowd coming along. Join us!

My Singing Night at Trinity 2024 Thursday, January 25th

An evening of music, connection, harmony, and spirit.

Note: next week I'm away and we decided not to meet and there will be no review Feb. 1st.

What fun we had singing along to these!

  • Stand by Me by Kingdom Choir, video, and by Boyce Avenue
  • Nella Fantasia by Jackie Evanco, and by Gimnazija Kranj Girls Choir videos
  • Gabriel’s Oboe by Ennio Morricone
  • Anthem from Chess by Rodrick Dixon, video, and by Lind Eder
  • Happy Together by Ray Conniff, video
  • Tijuana Taxi  and Spanish Flea by Herb Alpert & the Tiuana Brass
  • Fanfare for the Common Man by Emerson, Lake & Palmer
  • Get Outta My Dreams, Get into My Car by Billy Ocean
  • I Can Dream About You by Dan Hartman
  • Dream On by Aerosmith
  • Come Sail Away by Styx
  • Dream Weaver by Gary Wright
  • More than a Feeling by Boston
  • Fantasy by Earth, Wind & Fire
  • Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft by Klaatu
  • Orinoco Flow by Enya
  • Last Night I Had the Strangest Dream by Simon & Garfunkel
  • Winken, Blinken And Nod by the Irish Rovers
  • Sh-Boom (Life Could Be a Dream) by The Chords
  • Do Wah Diddy Diddy by Manfred Mann
  • Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing by Eclipse 6

As you'll see by those titles, we're still on the theme of dreaming and wishing and stars, but, we went off on an instrumental tangent, to a nonsense lyric theme, and then ended up on a space theme, reminiscing, laughing and singing. I'm not sure how we ended up in outer space, but it was funny and surprising that we were suddenly seeing UFO's on album covers and hearing synthesizers. The biggest laughs were for Tiuana Taxi and Spanish Flea. When I played the Ray Conniff version of Happy Together, we remembered the Ray Conniff Singers and that led to Herb Alpert and other memories of our parents' or grandparent's albums. We sang along, of course, remembering so much detail, and details of the surrounding memories! Fantastic.

You know it's not just "Renate's" Singing Night, but it's My Singing Night and that means each of you too. So, I have playlists prepared, but when you see something you like, that's what we sing, and we have the power to look things up and find your music to share. I encourage you to go off on a tangent, let your memories guide you. Chances are, we remember too, or forget in the same way, haha.

I remembered times in my teens sitting in a friend's basement or bedroom on a couch or sitting on a bed or on the floor, gathered around the record player, singing, chatting, and snacking. Good memories. And, now we're creating new ones. The Fellowship Room at church is so nice! We have sofas and armchairs and the big smart TV which we watch together.

Alison had recommended Stand by Me for the Black History Month Service, and I found the video of the performance of Stand by Me by a choir for Harry and Megan's Royal Wedding. It's so good! It wasn't easy to sing along with, so we listened to the Boyce Avenue cover. Boyce Avenue is always so chill and clear and easy to sing along with. I won't be here for that service, or the rehearsals for it, so I hope that Kevin can find a good arrangement for us. His plan had been The Goodness of God, which we started learning at Praise Team, and is also excellent.

One of the things that we talked about is how I prefer songs that can be sung along to, (or danced to), so most choral works are not my favourite. It's funny that choir is so huge a part of my life but I don't listen to choral music. I do appreciate things like Eric Whitacre's stuff and Voces8, for their complex beauty, but I prefer more accessible stuff. For My Singing Night, I try to choose pieces that we won't have a hard time singing along with.

Here's a link to my public Trinity Singing Night 2024 Apple Playlist. It's getting big.

And my Trinity Singing Night 2024 YouTube Playlist which is also growing.

This Sunday, January 28th, Praise Team and Trinity Choir rehearse at 9:30, and we're leading this week. Wear black and white or black and black.

If you enter by the elevator instead of by the washrooms, you can hang up your coat in the closet there and leave wet boots there as well. If you want, you can leave a pair of "indoor shoes" in the closet. Aim to come early (9:15?) to relax and chat and have some tea or coffee (new coffee maker!). The hymns we're going to sing on January 28th are Make a Joyful Noise, Go Make a Difference, Spirit Open My Heart, and Give Thanks. If we're quick, we can go over Canon of Hope together.

Next Tuesday, Praise Team sings at 10:00 and YRCC rehearsal is at 7:30. I'm going to miss Praise Team, my "happy hour". I can't miss YRCC because it's Lauren's birthday, and we're starting small groups at 6:30. Maybe I'll leave at breaktime. I'll be away on Sunday, February 4th, and Tuesday, February 6th.

I'm leaving Wednesday morning (31st) for Punta Cana for a week. I'm so excited! I'm turning 60 on February 5th. Best birthday present ever from my handsome and handy husband. So, I'm going to miss a bunch of stuff. Praise Team and Trinity Choir will have Kevin taking care of everything as usual, YRCC will have Lauren helping Donna. Lauren is my Assistant Director. For My Singing Night, we decided not to meet on Feb. 1st. We'll be back together on February 8th, the evening after I return from my trip. I will be singing and dancing as much as I can, helped by the all-inclusive beverages. Cheers!

Hanging out listening to records :-)

YRCC 2024 Rehearsal Review Tues. Jan. 23

It was a snowy, messy day, but not as bad as the forecast said, warmer and wetter with less snow, and the streets were mainly clear. Sigh of relief. Still, it was not easy to deal with, so it is understandable if you stayed home. Those of us who were there learned lots and did well, and our power will help when everyone is together.

I was a little stressed and skipped the warm-up (it's especially when you're a little stressed that you need to warm up, but it is what it is) so we stood up and sang All I Have to Do is Dream. It wasn't the worst warm-up. It was very good. And, as usual, all the stress, all the worries in the world disappeared once we started singing.

1. Nella Fantasia: We started on page 6, where we start singing in English. (that means up to page 6 it's Italian). Important note: the music is written so you can sing either English or Italian throughout, so there are sometimes extra notes where the Italian has an extra syllable. *The bold notes are for Italian but we are singing the English words here, so choose the unbold notes where you need to choose. There are also dotted slurs, which are ours here. At first, the tenors and basses are in unison, singing the melody. At the bottom of the page the tenors continue with melody, altos sing a harmony, and basses have a special part that signals that the bridge is coming. The sopranos come in with another special part at the top of page 7, and the second half of page 7 is very cool, continuing to the top of page 8, a bridge to the key change at 37. Watch the page turn! Sopranos and Basses get their bit of melody right there! We sight read to the end. It's such a special and beautiful song. If you aren't familiar with it, please listen to some of the versions out there. I've got some on my YouTube channel. Here's a link to the YRCC Spring 2024 playlist. You'll see that there's a video of the YRCC performing this. We did it with Mary Ellen singing a solo at the beginning. This year, it's different. You might have notes on the first part that will need to change. Hopefully, they're all in pencil and you can erase them. This time, the sopranos will sing the melody from page 3-5 in Italian, and the rest will sing oos as written, Alto, Tenor, Bass. Everybody maybe gets to sing the words "fondo al l'anima" I haven't decided yet if we want to switch to English right there or not.

2. Joseph Medly: Let's start at the very beginning, a very good place to start. I have the last bar of Donna's intro circled (in pencil) to remind me of how it sounds when we start. We get three nice bass notes ba-ba-ba Way, way back. At 9, we all sing the melody. At 17, we divide. Tenors, you have a really special  note that I really want to hear loud. Ja-co-ob. At the top of page 6, watch out, altos and basses start on beat 3. On beats 1 and 2, Sopranos and Tenors need to be good and loud! It says Molto allargando there. That means increasingly much slower and much broader. Big drama. I have to conduct the tempo change, so each note, and we get louder and louder, so that "sons" is fff. And look at Donna's accompaniement. She's got a accents on every note and a tremolo under that word. I love that! We also reviewed the Go, go, go Joseph section starting at the pick-up to bar 262 (page 29), but stopped before the ending at 285. We'll save that for much later.

3. City of Stars: If you are not familiar with this song, you can go to my YouTube channel to hear a couple versions, including the sheet music we have. We sight read the whole thing, and it's got some challenges, but it's very cool and not too hard. It's jazzy. **It swings. So, instead of a straight bum-bum-bum-bum, you feel a bum-ba-bum-ba thing. We started on page 6, where everyone is singing. This part has a very whimsical and positive feeling: that crazy rat-a-tat-tat feeling tells us our dreams of love may finally come true. At the beginning, there's an optional solo and I haven't decide yet whether I want that option or if we'll have all the bass clef singers singing there. Can you sing softly, tenors and basses? The beginning is slower and a little moody.

4. Rewrite the Stars: We learned parts starting at bar 19 until the end of page 5. We talked through the whole song. There are 3 sections: first after the positive guy, we're singing that we can rewrite the stars (it's up to you and it's up to me- no one can keep us apart) then after the girl is negative, we say that no one can rewrite the stars (it's not up to you; it's not up to me), after the bridge, we are just a little hopeful, asking How do we rewrite the stars (it's up to you) and why don't we? But, there's a sad ending "we're bound to break and my hands are tied." Not a Renate ending. Watch out for the timing with those slightly different words. You need to add a syllable here and take one away there (kind off like Nella Fantasia with the difference between the English and the Italian). Pay attention to the words. There are 2 solos in this arrangement. The first is written for a tenor voice, and in the movie it's a man (Zac Efron-mmmmm), and the second is written in the same range for an alto voice, and in the movie it's a woman (Zendaya). Visually, for the audience, a man and a woman is simplest, but we could to a woman and a man, or a woman and a woman, why not? The timing in both solos is tricky, so we do want those to be solos, not sections. Melinda's got them both down, and she's always willing to sing, so she can easily do either one. Let me know if you feel like one of those solos interests you. The two soloists sing page 15 alone as a duet (bar 104 to the end).

Next week: Tuesday, January 30th

YRCC Weather Watching

Our first Tuesday night rehearsal was cancelled because of the snow and freezing rain, because there was a Weather Warning, and travel conditions were very bad, people were told already the day before that they should not plan to go anywhere, and it turned out the forecast was correct. That was pretty clear already in the morning. So, Lauren and I spoke in the early afternoon and decided to make the call to cancel. I'm so glad we did! It was a miserable storm. "Oh, the weather outside was frightful!"

It can happen again. We have a long winter.

Tomorrow looks like it's going to be very snowy. Several centimetres are forecast to fall in the afternoon and evening, just when we're going to want to drive to choir. Sigh. If it's just snow, we should be okay. We're Canadian and we can't just stay at home all winter. Chances are, we won't cancel. But, please be prepared for an announcement any time the forecast is bad. Check your emails, check our Facebook page and this blog. Sometimes, your name is missed on an email. The website email blast acts up sometimes.

Most importantly, please stay at home if you need to.

We have months of rehearsals still, and there's all the stuff on the website and my reviews here on my blog to help you catch up if you miss a rehearsal. Some people send me an email to let me know when they're not coming. That's super nice, especially if you're in a small group or if you're responsible for equipment or have a solo. Some people send a Facebook message. That's also appreciated.

I don't always get those messages until I get home after rehearsal, but it's still nice. If you want to be sure that I'll get the message, send it before 6:00.

And, for messages to you from the choir, please make sure that the email and phone number you gave Carol when you registered are the ones that will reach you on a Tuesday afternoon when we might need to call or email you to let you know we're cancelling.

Be safe when you shovel snow. Don't hurt yourself. I care about you.

10 centimeters- get out and shovel early

It was so nice meeting Zarme! I'm very happy that she found us. We sang songs in my YRCC theme, which will also be my theme at the January Trinity Seniors' Get Together on Monday, January 29th. The theme is quite broad, inspired by When You Wish Upon a Star, and our Star theme of last season.

We talked about how we might dream and wish for things to happen, but we can also make them happen, make our dreams come true. We don't need wait for the stars, or God to answer.

We talked about the cognitive benefits of singing, especially for seniors. We need to get those neurons firing, wake up memories, recharge talents, skills, knowledge, and help to inspire us to make new connections in our neural circuits. Music does that for us. Even listening to music is beneficial, but singing is better, and singing in a group is even better. Our simple and casual evenings are more than just fun. We are working on staying sharp and healthy.

Getting together like we do is also invaluable for getting us out of the house, keeping us sane. We need the company of other people. Something we talked about which made us laugh together and feel connected was the surprises we get when we learn about the hidden features on our cars, like seat warmers and steering wheel heaters, among other things. It's very healthy to laugh at ourselves and to commiserate with others. We ate a little chocolate with our tea, and chocolate makes everything better. It was a lovely evening in lovely company.

We always have a lovely evening, and wonder why we don't have a bigger turnout. Maybe you're waiting for better weather, longer days? Don't wait. Winter is long, and My Singing Night helps.

YRCC 2024 Rehearsal Review January 16th

We're back!!! Wow, what a wonderful sound we had!

We had a bit of a rough start, with the door by our room being under construction, with Peggy's power failure, and the generally frozen world to deal with. But, we managed. Thanks to Marlene, we found our way and had a cart to help us get the equipment there. Peggy got her car charged and got all of our binders there. And, within a short time, we all had binders in our hands. Once we started singing, the whole world, every worry, washed away. I love my choir!

Before I do my review, I have to talk about binders. I meant to do it yesterday and got carried away with other topics. It is very important, imperative, that you return your binder and all the music in it at the end of every season

We have an enormous library of music, currently living at Peggy's house, 5 filing cabinets full (I think it's 5, along with a printer/scanner and all kinds of stuff). When the binders get emptied, it's a huge undertaking that upends her house. Then, when the reading committe and I have determined the new season's music, filling the binders up again is another big operation. Still, it's like a conveyor system, and works like a well-oiled machine. EXCEPT when people don't understand and hold on to their old music, it puts a wrench in the system. If you were one of those people, don't feel like I'm pointing my finger only at you. There are a few every season.

We all like to have the same score we marked up last time. We've done You'll Never Walk Alone so many times, and each time you'll have the same notes to remind you of the tricky bits, or things that I've changed, like singing the first verse in Italian this time when we sing Nella Fantasia, which the sopranos will want to make notes on (pencil only, of course). Giving everyone the right number is not easy if we're not all cooperating. Please keep that in mind.

Another thing I forgot to talk about is small groups and solos and duets. I've got some music for small groups, and I'd like to have a couple duets or solos. The theme is dreams, wishes, stars. Small groups will meet at 6:30 starting the week after next.

We had a short warm-up so we could start singing as soon as possible.

1. All I Have to Do is Dream: We learned the whole song and sang it beautifully! If you misssed rehearsal today, don't worry. We'll do it again, and you can always listen to your part on the website, see screenshot below. We went over parts that I had marked in my music as being difficult in the past. Luckily, I had my copy again. I've been #16 for over 20 years.

2. Somewhere Out There: We sang the whole thing, but without going over any parts. We sang this recently and it shows off our nice big bass clef sections. We have recordings of all the parts that you can get from the website.

2. Nella Fantasia: We didn't start singing this, but I introduced it, and let the sopranos know that they will be singing the first verse in Italian. The rest of you will sing 'ohs' until the last few bars of that first verse. Then, the rest of the song will be sung in English, starting with the tenors and basses on the second verse. If you're not familiar with this song, I've got 3 versions on my  YRCC Spring 2024 playlist on YouTube. There's also a link on the recodings page of the website for you.

3. City of Stars: We sang through the whole thing, but didn't learn any parts. It's got a really special mood, an interesting change of pace for our concert. There's a recording of our sheet music on my YouTube playlist, and a movie clip too.

4. Medley froom Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat: We're just going to call this the Joseph Medley. It's big! We "walked through" the whole thing and sang a little, then started learning the last song the "Go, go, go, Joseph!" part, starting at page 29. Yay! BTW, I have the note names pencilled in on my music. It's from way back when I was not used to reading the bass clef, so I had just started singing Tenor. Thanks to all the music librarians over the years for keeping the numbers in order so that I could get it back every time!

5. You'll Never Walk Alone: Truly amazing. I love, love, love our arrangement of this song! If you're new and felt a little lost, we have recordings on the website of the accompaniment and each part, so you can sing along with your part. You can have your binder in front of you, or open the pdf on your computer.

Next week, Tuesday, January 23rd.

  • City of Stars
  • Joseph Medley: Jacob&Sons, Go, Go
  • Nella Fantasia
  • Rewrite the Stars

Here's a screenshot of the page on the website with the recordings. You can work on the music at home if you like, but it's not required or expected. It's up to you. The page is called Recordings and Music Scans. There's a quick link on the home page called Music Recordings. You need to sign in. You can see that my name is there at the bottom left. I was logged in. The menu on the left is the Members section with the Executive pages which you won't have access to, unless you're on the executive.

This was our first My Singing Night using the TV in the Fellowship Room! It was so good, the sound, the quality, the comfort! I bought an adaptor for my iPhone and iPad, and we used the iPad. The sound was excellent, especially without the noise of the projector's fan. And, we could have had all the lights on, the picture was so good. We did turn the light above the TV off . There was some freezing on YouTube, so I'll look into that, but I'm happy that I don't need to carry my heavy equipment anymore. We watched quite a few videos because it was so nice. We still did lots of singing. I reminded me of hanging out with girlfriends as teenagers, when we would sit in someone's basement listening to records, and singing along, but also just hanging out and talking. We talked about language (sociolinguistics and psycholinguistics) and Ottawa, among many things, we prepared the closet in the music room, and enjoyed a little chocolate. It was a lovely evening in lovely company.

My Singing Night at Trinity 2024 January 4th Review

An evening of music, connection, harmony, and spirit.

First My Singing Night at Trinity in 2024! Here's the list of the songs we sang.

  • Let it Go video by Disney (Idina Menzel)
  • Let it Go video from Taylor Swift’s 1989 world tour
  • The Mummers Dance by Loreena McKennitt video and audio recording
  • Choir!Choir!Choir! video Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas and Don’t Stop
  • Any Dream Will Do video from 1999 film of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat with Donny Osmond, and the audio recording to sing along
  • The Holly and the Ivy by Roger Whittaker
  • Shining Star by The Manhattans
  • Dream Weaver and Love is Alive by Gary Wright
  • All I Have to Do is Dream by The Everly Brothers
  • California Dreamin’ by The Mamas & The Papas
  • Sweet Dreams by the Eurythmics
  • Rainbow Connection and Return to Pooh Corner by Kenny Loggins
  • Suspicious Minds by Elvis Presley and by Fine Young Cannibals
  • Over the Rainbow by Israel Kamakawiwo’ole
  • I Wish by Stevie Wonder
  • Counting Stars by OneRepublic
  • Winken, Blinken & Nod by Paul Austin Kelly & Richard Durrant

We talked about Advent, Christmastide, and Epiphany. It's interesting how Christmas has developed over time into a big pre-Christmas month-long (or more) extravaganza, which ends pretty quickly (after Boxing Day, it seems) and the old Christmastide is just a strange story and a crazy song, the 12 Days of Christmas. I'm clearing all the Christmas stuff away today and tomorrow. I started on New Year's Day. I won't take down the ligths yet though. It's still so dark.

We left Christmas behind here too and started this new year with a wishing/dreaming theme. We didn't talk about New Year's Resolutions. I resolved only to ignore them: not make any (except this one) and not to ask anyone about them. The theme is from my YRCC theme of this season, which continues with light and stars from last season, and adds on the idea of wishing on stars and the dreams we wish and pray about, especially dreams of a better, brighter world.

We enjoyed the power of singing Let it Go. I love it, and I love watching little girls sing it with great enthusiasm and all the gestures and movements of Elsa in the scene from Frozen. For us grown-up girls, the song has much more meaning, and the gestures help to punctuate our words. If you haven't done it in a while (kids are now big), you should definitely sing along with the video, nice and loud while nobody's home. It's especially satisfying when it's cold outside.

We laughed at how well or not and how much we remembered songs from our youth when we didn’t have the lyrics. We are so very grateful for all the sing-along videos and for the lyrics and especially the sing-along lyrics that scroll with the song on Apple Music. We remember hearing songs on the radio and just singing along with whatever words we could make out, often just the chorus. Sometimes, we could buy the album, on vinyl or cassette tape or CD, and the liner would have lyrics on it. The CD and cassette tape lyrics were tiny!

As always, it was a lovely evening in lovely company.  (by the way, we were half YRCC and half Trinity with one family/friend participating)

I'm looking forward to singing with bigger groups in 2024 and using the Fellowship Room with it's big screen and the big TV screen, and comfortable seating. It's been very nice when there are only a few of us, as we can get more personal about our music. But, I do think there's a lot of music that many, many people have in common. And, it's always fun to learn new stuff. Please come and join us.

This Sunday, Trinity Choir starts at 9:30. We have a couple of nice songs to learn.

Next Tuesday, Praise Team starts at 10:00 and YRCC starts too with our Holiday Potluck Party and some "Thursday night" singing.

Here's the link to my public playlist of all of the songs we sing, which I update after every Thursday. It's getting so big! I will start a new list for 2024.  Apple Music Playlist 2024 (Apple Music Playlist 2023 is still available)

And, I've separated my YouTube playlists too.  YouTube 2024 (and YouTube 2023)

Thank you for hosting, Trinity!

My Singing Nights at Trinity Starting Thursday, January 4th, 2024

My Singing Night starts again tomorrow, Thursday, January 4th, at 7:30pm.

I hope you've all recovered from your holiday celebrations.

I will have a few more Christmas songs for us to sing, because I don't think I had enough Christmas singing, and it's still Christmastide. And, we'll start on my next theme which is Dreaming. Wishing upon stars, and dreams are my YRCC theme this season, so be prepared to sing about stars and wishes and dreams.

YRCC folk who have to wait until next Tuesday to sing together might want to join us this week. You're always welcome, though, every Thursday.

Here's Andrew Lloyd Webber's  Any Dream Will Do from Joseph for you to sing along with. Maybe we'll watch the clip with Donny Osmond tomorrow.
